Tropical Horticulture Writing Sample

Socioeconomics of Coffee in Producing and Consuming Countries

In Tropical Horticulture I was asked to collect information including data, facts and other information that pertained to a specific topic in the tropical horticulture industry.  I decided to focus on the socioeconomic effect of coffee in both producing and consuming countries. This paper dives into the challenges that producers have as well as challenges that consuming countries have and how each depends on coffee each day for different reasons.

Watershed Quality and Management Brochure

Are you a Water Conscious Farmer?

Watershed quality and management focused on how our water sources are affected by everyday life.  Biotic and abiotic factors all play a role in the overall quality of the water surrounding us.  In this class, I was challenged to select an emerging contaminate and "publish" a pamphlet that could be understood by the general public about their role in improving water quality. I selected farmers as my target audience and touch on how farming impacts the water.

Sociohorticulture

Service Learning Project

In Sociohorticulture I was given the opportunity to dive into the relationship between people and plants.  In this class, I obtained knowledge of how the mind can be stimulated to perform at a higher level in the presence of nature and the economic benefit of including plants into infrastructure. Attached is my service learning project where I was given the opportunity to visit a local farm and have hands-on experience with plants as well as see how others interacted with the plants.

Introduction to Floral Design

Floral Design Portfolio

During my time at Texas A & M University, I was forced out of my comfort zone and tried my hand at a floral design class.  In this class, I learned the basic design elements, how to arrange flowers in a way that is visually appealing and how to identify common flowers and greenery used in the floral industry.  I am by no means a professional but exploring the artistic side of Horticulture was a nice change of speed for a semester.  I have attached my Portfolio from the class which includes photos of my designs and the descriptions.

Plant Propagation Research Paper

SNA style report

During my time at Texas A & M University, I had the opportunity to participate in a Plant Propagation Laboratory.  In this Lab, I learned how to take cuttings, graft on herbaceous and woody plant species, use micropropagation, plants nutritional needs and collect data.  This paper is written in SNA format on the stratification and scarification of peach seeds.

International Floriculture Marketing Creative Thinking Project

Urban Cultivations

This project was designed to make the class think outside of the box and create our own product.  The idea was to create a product that could then be marketed to a select group of people. I decided to create Urban Cultivations a quarterly subscription box targeted to cure plant blindness.  There are different box subscriptions to meet the needs of many different people.

General Horticulture Nutrient Study Tool

Plant Nutrient Deficiency Flow Chart

The purpose of this study tool was to help me recognize the relationship between plants and their nutrient uptake. I created this flowchart as a study tool for my third exam in Horticulture 201 my freshman year. However, I have referred back to this chart throughout my time at Texas A&M University. There have been many classes, exams, and projects that I have had that require me to diagnose and recognize nutrient deficiencies. This flow chart leads one to common symptoms found in Micro- and Macronutrient deficiencies and to common remediation practices.
